The Toronto Blue Jays, in partnership with Baseball Canada, will host a National Coaching Clinic for baseball coaches working at all levels of competition. Baseball Canada will provide professional development credit for each of the modules that coaches attend, as well as host four NCCP Instructor Beginner Context modules: BASERUNNING, INFIELDING, OUTFIELDING AND HITTING.

The Clinic will take place at Rogers Centre on January 4-6, 2013 with most of the event taking place on the field. Access to a classroom environment will be required for off-field events. The clinic schedule will be arranged so that each module will be repeated, thereby providing coaches with the opportunity to attend sessions that are running concurrent to those they are attending. A key messaging component of the clinic will be that coaches will learn to understand and apply in practice the concepts being taught over the weekend. Topics covered: Pitching, Catching, Hitting, Infield play and Outfield play.

Cost is $120 per participant.

Friday, January 4:
6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.: Coaches Social
The Coaches Social will be held at Club 200 VIP (near section 224). Participants will be asked to enter Rogers Centre through Gate #8. Registration will take place between 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., and their will be a "Hot Stove" discussion happening from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Participants will receive a notebook, lanyard, and will be assigned to a specific group for the weekend. Light snacks will be served, with alcoholic beverages being available for purchase. The dress code is casual. If you are unavailable to attend the Coaches Social, you can register on Saturday morning.
Saturday, January 5:
8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.: Registration. Please enter through Gate #5.
8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.: NCCP Clinics

The NCCP clinics are not mandatory, but are FREE OF CHARGE. The modules will be conducted by an NCCP Baseball Facilitator, and will take place in a classroom setting.

Participants will be asked to choose one of the following:

  1. NCCP Instructor Stream: Baserunning
  2. NCCP Instructor Stream: Infielding
  3. NCCP Instructor Stream: Outfielding
  4. NCCP Instructor Stream: Hitting
  5. NCCP Initiation Coach Workshop (for first-time coaches!)
12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.: Lunch at Club 200 VIP (near section 224). Lunch will be provided for participants courtesy of the Toronto Blue Jays.
2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.: On field portion of Clinic
Participants will be divided into 12 different even groups. Over the next two days, coaches will rotate through all stations listed below. All stations will take place on (or near) the field. Stations include: Pitching, Catching, Baserunning, Infield, Outfield, Hitting, Managing a Line-up, Arm Care, and a Blue Jays Clubhouse tour. Please dress appropriately, including comfortable clothing for active participation, running or turf shoes.
6:45 p.m. – 9:45 p.m.: Batting Practice
Participants of the Coaches Clinic will be given the opportunity to take Batting Practice on the field at Rogers Centre. Coaches should bring their baseball glove and athletic attire. Helmets and Bats will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own. Batting Practice is not mandatory, and individuals will be assigned to specific BP groups in the coming weeks.
Sunday, January 6:
7:30 a.m. -8:00 a.m.: Check-in. Please enter through Gate #5.
8:00 a.m. -10:25 a.m.: On field portion of Clinic continues
10:25 a.m. – 10:40 a.m.: BREAK
10:40 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.: On field Clinic continues
12:15 p.m. -1:15 p.m.: LUNCH (Participants will be on their own for lunch, we recommend bringing food/drink).
1:15 p.m. – 2:50 p.m.: On field portion of Clinic continues
3:00 p.m.: Clinic Wrap-up

Baseball Canada NCCP Training Component

Baseball Canada's NCCP Professional Development (PD) program will begin on January 1, 2013. In a three-year timeframe, coaches must acquire 12 PD points in order to maintain certification.

Baseball Canada will provide 3 PD points for attending the full weekend, as outlined in the NCCP PD program. Coaches that attend the Baserunning, Infielding, Outfielding or Hitting session, will be awarded 5 PD per module. An illustration of the model appears below:

As of January 1, 2013 the coach has 0 PD points and must achieve 12 points before December 31, 2015.

  • Attend 2013 Blue Jays Coaches Clinic = 3 PD points
  • Attend NCCP (Baserunning, Infield, Outfield or Hitting) session = 5 PD points
  • Active coaching each of 3 years from 2013-2015 = 3 PD points
  • TOTAL = 11 PD points acquired before December 31, 2015

Coach is required to do one more PD event worth at least 1 PD point and upon completion, will maintain certification until December 31, 2018.

The cost of your NCCP Instructors Beginner Module is built into the total fee for the Clinic. There will be no additional fee for this part of the clinic.

Santos Alomar, Sr. – Sandy has over 50 years of experience in professional baseball, 21 as a player and 31 as a manager or coach. Sandy has seen and done it all in professional baseball. He was named to the 1970 All Star team. He has been credited with teaching his two sons, Roberto and Sandy Jr., everything they know about baseball and both went on to have great Major League careers.

Homer Bush – In his 9 year career, the speedy 2nd baseman won a World Series ring with the New York Yankees. In 1999 he batted .320 with 33 stolen Bases with the Blue Jays. Homer now spends his time coaching 10 u baseball in the great baseball state of Texas.

Doug Davis – A former Major Leaguer, Doug was a 3rd baseman and catcher. He spent the 2007 and 2008 seasons as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate, the Syracuse Chiefs of the International League, and formerly was the bench coach of the Florida Marlins in 2003-04. He is currently the Blue Jays' Minor League Field Coordinator.

DeMarlo Hale – DeMarlo joins the Blue Jays in 2013 and will serve as the new bench coach. Before joining the Blue Jays, DeMarlo coached for the Balitmore Orioles, Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers, winning a World Series with the Red Sox in 2007 as their third-base coach. As a player, DeMarlo played first base and outfield in the minor leagues for the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics.

Pat Hentgen – Is a former Major League pitcher, pitching in 14 seasons, 10 of those with the Blue Jays. Pat won the AL Cy Young Award in 1996, a World Series in 1993, was a 3x All-Star, and is regarded as one of the best pitcher in Blue Jays history. Pat is currently working as a Special Assistant to the Blue Jays Organization.

Jeff Krushell –  Former strength and conditioning coach for the Toronto Blue Jays, Jeff now consults with Major League Baseball International over seeing the Strength and Development program helping to develop the game worldwide. In this capacity he is involved with baseball performance programs in Canada, South Africa, Italy, Holland, Germany, Czech Republic, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, France and China and has presented at seminars, coaching conferences and player development programs all around the globe. Jeff has helped with the strength and conditioning programs for various professional players and teams and hosts his own radio show Krush Performance.

Tim Leiper – Leiper, a former outfielder, had a 12-season (1985-1996) minor league playing career. Tim was recently hired by the Blue Jays as a Special Assistant to Player Development. Previously an offseason resident of Ottawa, Leiper coached on the 2004 Canadian Olympic team, and Canada's 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classic squads. He was also a part of the Baseball Canada Staff that won bronze medals at both the 2008 and 2011 Baseball World Cups and the Gold Medal in the 2011 Pan-American games.

Lloyd Moseby – A 2nd overall pick by the Blue Jays in 1978, Lloyd played 12 seasons in the Major Leagues and was named to the All Star team in 1986. Lloyd won a Silver Slugger award in 1983 and is often regarded as one of the best centre fielders in Blue Jays history. Lloyd served as the 1st base coach for the Blue Jays in 1998 and 1999.

Chad Mottola – Chad was recently hired as Blue Jays Hitting Coach after coaching for the last couple years in the Blue Jays minor league system. Before playing professionally Chad attended UCF and was the fifth overall draft pick in 1992 MLB Draft. Chad then played professionally from 1992 to 2007. He is thought of as one of the young up and coming coaches in Major Leagues for 2013.

Rance Mulliniks – Played 16 seasons in the Major Leagues and was a member of the 1992 World Series Champion Blue Jays. Rance is a student of the game and known for his patience and discipline at the plate. Rance served as the Blue Jays Minor League Hitting Coordinator for 4 years.

Duane Ward –  In his 12 year Major League career, Duane was named to the All-Star Team in 1993, and won two World Series championships in 1992 and 1993 with the Jays. In 1993 he set the Toronto Blue Jays single-season save record (45). He has 3 wins and 3 saves in World Series play. Duane attended Instructional League this past fall to act as a guest coach/mentor to the Blue Jays Young Prospects.

The Blue Jays have reserved a special hotel rate ($99/night) at the Radisson Admiral on the Toronto Harbourfront for coaches attending the Clinic. The Radisson Admiral is located minutes away from Rogers Centre at 249 Queens Quay West, and this special rate is valid January 5-6, 2013 only.
