If you're a big baseball fan, why wouldn't you pick your lottery numbers based on your all-time favorite players? It's better than using your zip code or the back-end of your Social Security number.
A store in Dearborn, Mo., just 35 miles north of Kansas City, sold one of the winning tickets to Wednesday's $587.5 million Powerball jackpot. The numbers -- 5, 23, 16, 22, 29 and 6 -- match Royals greats George Brett, Mark Gubicza, Bo Jackson, Dennis Leonard, Dan Quisenberry and Willie Wilson. All are Royals Hall of Famers except for Jackson.
We're not 100 percent positive, but guessing the winner was probably a Royals fan. And so is the lottery machine.
Update, 11/30: According to Jeff Passan, while the winners, Mark and Cindy Hill, are Royals fans, they did not make their Powerball choices based on Royals greats' uniform numbers. (Consciously, anyway.) Asked whose numbers he would have chosen if he had, Mark said he would have used Frank White (20), George Brett (5), Amos Otis (26) and Freddie Patek (2).
