On Monday, February 23, the Orioles will hold the 5th Annual OriolesREACH Birdland Golf Classic at The Founders Club to benefit the Miracle League of Manasota, an organization dedicated to providing an opportunity for every person to play baseball, regardless of their ability.
The Miracle League of Manasota, the baseball league for players with special needs, will close its fall season on November 15 with ballgames, awards and a party - along with a check presentation by the Orioles honoring retired Major League player Derek Jeter.
The Baseball Writers Association of America tonight announced that Orioles Manager BUCK SHOWALTER has been voted the American League Manager of the Year, the third time in his career he has received the honor (also 2004 with Texas and 1994 with the Yankees). Showalter joins BOBBY COX and TONY LaRUSSA (four each), and DUSTY BAKER, JIM LEYLAND, and LOU PINIELLA (three each) in winning the award three or more times. Under Showalter's guidance, the 2014 Orioles (96-66) won the American League East crown and advanced to the American League Championship Series for the first time since 1997.
Earlier tonight Rawlings announced that three Orioles - SS J.J. HARDY, CF ADAM JONES and RF NICK MARKAKIS - have been named this year's American League Gold Glove Award recipients for defensive excellence at their respective positions. The Orioles and Kansas City Royals led the majors with three award winners each in 2014.
The Orioles and the Mayors' Feed the Hungry Program are teaming up again this year to collect and distribute food to help people in need in the Sarasota area. Beginning November 4, the Orioles will collect non-perishable food items at Ed Smith Stadium and will host the charity's Thanksgiving Sorting Day at the stadium on November 21.
