Mastroianni expected to miss three more weeks

CLEVELAND -- Outfielder Darin Mastroianni, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a left ankle stress reaction, is expected to remain in a walking boot another week, Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony said on Friday.
Mastroianni was originally scheduled to have the boot taken off this week, but after undergoing another MRI exam, it was decided that he needs to remain in the boot for one more week.
"I don't think it's healed as much as they had hoped," Antony said. "I don't have a timeline. It's just taking a little bit longer than we had hoped. Everybody heals differently."
Mastroianni, who last played on April 15, will also need to go on a rehab assignment once he's cleared for baseball activities. So while there's no official timetable on his return, he's expected to be out another three weeks.
"When he does come back, it's going to take some time for baseball activity, so he'll need to go get some at-bats to get back into game shape," Antony said. "Once we get back home [on Thursday], we'll know more. He should be out of the boot by then."
With Mastroianni out, Wilkin Ramirez will continue to serve as the backup center fielder behind rookie Aaron Hicks.
Willingham sits for series opener against Tribe
CLEVELAND -- Josh Willingham was held out of the lineup against the Indians on Friday, as Twins manager Ron Gardenhire cited Willingham's struggles against right-hander Justin Masterson as the reason for being on the bench.
Willingham, who is 2-for-12 with six strikeouts in his career against Masterson, has also been dealing with some minor knee soreness stemming from an awkward slide on Saturday. He served as designated hitter in all three games against the Tigers this week as a result.
With Willingham on the bench, Ryan Doumit made the start at designated hitter. It marked Doumit's first start at DH since April 16.
"Lefties do better against this guy and it gives me a chance to give Josh a couple days off in a row," Gardenhire said. "He's been playing an awful lot. It also gives Doumit a chance tonight and he'll catch tomorrow. So, it's a matchup thing."
Makeup game with White Sox set for Aug. 9
CLEVELAND -- Minnesota's postponed game on April 19 against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Friday, Aug. 9, the Twins announced.
The makeup game will be played at 1:10 p.m. CT, with the originally-scheduled game remaining as a 7:10 p.m. start.
The Twins still have one more postponed game at Target Field to reschedule, as they were postponed due to inclement weather on April 17 against the Angels. The date for that makeup game has yet to be announced.
The Twins also rescheduled their postponed game against the Mets on April 14 for Aug. 19, which was a mutual off-day for both clubs.
Minnesota already made up a postponed game against the Marlins with a doubleheader at Target Field on April 23.
