Buchholz wasn't perfect -- he walked two and hit a batter -- but pitched out of two jams and picked up a pair of strikeouts.
"It was a long time coming, said Buchholz, who was making his first start since suffering a stress fracture in his lower back in June. "[In the] first inning, my mind-set was just to try to relax -- don't try to overthrow, just try to spot up, and that sort of went a little haywire. I think being in those situations, having guys on base, is good. It just allows you to be ready for the situations in the season."
Twins right-hander Jason Marquis labored in his Spring Training debut with his new team, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks over just 1 2/3 innings. He also threw three wild pitches and saw the defense struggle behind him with two errors.
"I wasn't hitting my spots where I wanted to," Marquis said. "When I was keeping the ball down, the ball was on the ground. It's early in spring. This is the first time I've been on the mound since mid-August, since I broke my leg, so I was excited definitely to be out there. I work every day to make sure come April everything's right."
The Red Sox scored four runs in the second frame with Josh Kroeger, Jason Repko and Ryan Sweeney each picking up an RBI.
Ortiz extended the lead with a solo home run off right-hander Jeff Manship in the third inning for his first homer of the spring.
The Twins finally got on the scoreboard with two runs in the fifth inning, as Tsuyoshi Nishioka and Joe Mauer picked up RBI singles.
Catching prospect Dan Butler launched a three-run homer as part of Boston's five-run seventh inning.
Up next for the Twins: Right-hander Scott Baker is set to make his first Grapefruit League start on Tuesday against the Rays at 12:05 p.m. CT at Charlotte Sports Park. Ryan Doumit is also slated to make his first start at catcher after seeing time at designated hitter and in left field so far this spring. Right-hander Jeff Niemann is scheduled to start for the Rays.
