Big fourth helps Twins take down Rays

Liriano racks up four strikeouts in three scoreless innings

at Port Charlotte, Fla.
Saturday, March 20

Twins at the plate: Ben Revere doubled off David Price to lead off the game and scored when Rays catcher Dioner Navarro threw wild to first after fielding Orlando Hudson's bunt. Alexi Casilla had an RBI double, Drew Butera had a run-scoring single and Revere singled home two more in the Twins' four-run fourth.

Rays at the plate: Sean Rodriguez singled home Elliot Johnson in the fifth to score Tampa Bay's first run. Justin Ruggiano tripled to center field -- his third triple of the spring -- in the sixth and scored on a wild pitch to cut the Twins' lead to 5-2.

Twins on the mound: Francisco Liriano made his third start of the spring (fourth appearance) and allowed no runs on three hits while striking out three in three innings of work. The left-hander is vying for the fifth spot in the rotation with Glen Perkins and Brian Duensing.

Rays on the mound: David Price made his first Major League appearance since getting hit by a bat on his right hand in a March 10 game against the Red Sox. He did pitch in a simulated Minor League game on Monday. The left-hander surrendered five runs (three earned) on 11 hits and three strikeouts in four innings pitched.

Worth noting: Michael Cuddyer, the Twins' starting right-fielder, started in center field and robbed Gabe Kapler of extra bases with a running backhanded catch with one out in the first inning. Cuddyer will serve as Minnesota's backup center fielder. ... Navarro was carted off the field and taken for X-rays after a collision with Jacque Jones at the plate.

Grapefruit League records: Twins 8-8; Rays 12-5

Up next: The Rays will play split-squad games at 1:05 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon. Against the Twins at Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla., Wade Davis will start. He will be followed by Heath Phillips and Dale Thayer. Scott Baker will start for Minnesota; also scheduled to see action are Jose Mijares, Perkins and Clay Condrey. Andy Sonnanstine will start against the Pirates live on MLB.TV at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Fla., and will be followed by Joe Bateman and Jeff Bennett. Daniel McCutchen will start for Pittsburgh; also scheduled to pitch are Vinnie Chulk and Octavio Dotel.
