Mauer given day off with cold symptoms

Redmond gets start with hot-hitting regular backstop sitting

MINNEAPOLIS -- After battling cold-like symptoms for over a week, Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer will finally get a day of rest.

Mauer was out of the Twins' lineup Thursday for the final game of their series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Veteran catcher Mike Redmond was behind the plate as Nick Blackburn took the hill for Minnesota.

After reaching base four times on three singles and a double Tuesday, Mauer went 1-for-4 Wednesday with a double to left field. But he continued to battle a cold, leading his skipper to give him the day off.

"Listening to him last night coughing in the game, he's feeling pretty crappy. He tried to play through it for I don't know how many days here," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Last night was pretty ugly. You can tell his bat was a little slower. It's time. As bad as you want to put him out there, it's time."

With Redmond in the lineup, the Twins also had the option of bringing catcher Jose Morales off the bench. Morales was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Saturday, but he has yet to see action.

"Most of it was for if I DH Joe, I've got the third catcher on the bench. But today, it's just not one of those real options," Gardenhire said. "I talked to [Mauer]. He'd go either way. He'd try it out and play no matter what you say."

Gardenhire did say Mauer would be available to come off the bench if Minnesota needed an extra bat. Mauer has just two pinch-hit appearances this season, but he is 2-for-2, including a two-run home run in a 6-5 loss against the Boston Red Sox.
