Tense moments for Twins, Yankees
Gomez, Teixeira exchange heated words after play at first
By Kelly Thesier / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- On Friday, in the top of the eighth inning of a game the Twins would eventually lose, 5-4, Carlos Gomez laid down a bunt that Yankees catcher Kevin Cash fielded. The throw beat Gomez to the bag, but first baseman Mark Teixeira started yelling at the outfielder for running too far inside the baseline. Teixeira said that it was the second time in the contest Gomez had done that, and the two started exchanging words. Both managers ended up on the field and things got heated between them after Ron Gardenhire started saying things to Teixeira. There were no ejections. "We were both kind of yelling," Gardenhire said. "I was saying 'Hey, there is nowhere he could go.' [Yankees manager] Joe [Girardi] was saying, 'Don't yell at my players.' And I just don't want my player to get shown up on the baseball field. Heat-of-the-moment stuff. He's defending, I'm defending. That's what we do."
