Gomez gets breather in finale
Twins outfielder sits following rough stretch of at-bats

SEATTLE -- There have been times this season when Twins manager Ron Gardenhire sees his excitable center fielder, Carlos Gomez, start to get out of whack at the plate. That's the time that Gardenhire usually tries to rein Gomez in by giving him a day off. And on Wednesday afternoon, Gomez got a little breather, as he was out of the lineup for the series finale against the Mariners. Gomez was 0-for-3 in Tuesday night's loss and has just one hit in his past 10 at-bats. "He's swinging a little crazy again," Gardenhire said. "We just have to calm him down. He's one of those young men [who's] full of energy and just wants to do so well. He gets a pitch and then swings and falls down on it, rather than putting a nice swing and taking a base hit. He just tries to do a little too much at times." Gardenhire said that sitting Gomez also gave him an opportunity to play Jason Kubel in right field. Kubel was 2-for-2 in his career vs. left-hander Ryan Feierabend, and his time in the DH spot could be limited in the coming days with the team facing four left-handers in its series at Oakland. "We thought we'd give Gomez a little break, but he'll be back at it when we get to Oakland, " Gardenhire said.
