Kenney to head ballpark authority

Former Hennepin County assistant gets top spot

MINNEAPOLIS -- Dan Kenney, administrative assistant to Hennepin County Commissioner Mike Opat and current member of the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission, was named executive director for the Minnesota ballpark authority on Friday.

The ballpark authority, which announced Kenney as its executive director at Friday's meeting in Minneapolis, will oversee the construction for the Twins' new ballpark, set to open for the 2010 season.

The executive director will serve as the chief executive officer of the authority, responsible for day-to-day administration of ballpark authority activities, and report directly to the authority's five commissioners.

Kenney, 40, graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in political science.

Since 1997, Kenney has worked as chief of staff for Opat, who helped plan the open-air downtown stadium. Before joining Hennepin County, Kenney spent six years working for the Minneapolis Department of Public Works and the Minneapolis City Council.

Other finalists considered were Steve Maki, director of facilities and engineering for the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission; David Metzen, Metzen Leadership; and Robert Randle, principal, BOSS International, Inc. There were 30 total applicants for the position.

The ballpark authority had spent the last two weeks reviewing applications before announcing the four finalists earlier this week.

Also, the Hennepin County Board recently announced a schedule of three public hearings during the week of Aug. 21 before it votes on imposing a countywide sales tax to help finance the 42,000-seat ballpark.

County residents are invited to provide input at the three hearings:
•   Aug. 22, 5-7 p.m., Board Room, 24th Floor, Hennepin County Government Center, 300 S. 6th St., Minneapolis
•   Aug. 23, 6-8 p.m., Council Chambers, Bloomington Civic Plaza, 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road
•   Aug. 24, 6-8 p.m., Council Chambers, Maple Grove Government Center, 12800 Arbor Lakes Parkway
