Twins sign first-round pick Levi Michael
Also sign supplemental picks Harrison and Boyd
Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN - The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have signed their first round pick from the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, infielder Levi Michael. Michael played shortstop for the University of North Carolina, where he batted .289 (70-for-242) with 14 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 48 rbi in 65 games for the Tar Heels.
"After a long, arduous process, we are thrilled to get Levi Michael signed and to have him as a member of the Twins organization," said Twins Scouting Director Deron Johnson. "Levi is a switch-hitting 20-year old college shortstop with speed and top of the order skills. We like his athleticism on both sides of the ball and he has the defensive skills to play either shortstop or second base. He is a hard worker and hard-nosed player."
Michael was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team and was also named to the NCBWA Freshman All-America Second Team in 2009. He started all 60 games for the Tar Heels in 2010 and led the club in batting (.346), while ranking 12th in the nation with 76 runs scored. Following the 2010 season, he played in the Cape Cod League and was named to the Eastern Division All-Star team, while also earning Baseball America Top 30 Cape Cod Prospect honors.
Levi Michael was recommended by Twins scout Ricky Taylor.

In addition, the Twins signed their second supplemental pick (55th overall), right-handed pitcher Hudson Boyd. The Bishop Verot (FL) High School graduate was named a 2011 Preseason Third-Team All-American by Baseball America. He was recommended by Twins scout Billy Corrigan.
