Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN - The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have agreed to terms with righthanded pitcher Luis Ayala on a one-year contract for the 2009 season.

Ayala, 31, began last season with the Washington Nationals. He was 1-8, 5.77 (57.2 ip, 37 er) in 62 appearances before being traded to the New York Mets on August 17. Ayala made 19 appearances with the Mets, going 1-2, 5.50 (18.0 ip, 11 er) with a career-high nine saves. His 81 appearances in 2008 were tied for the fifth most among National League relievers.

In six Major League seasons, Ayala has a career record of 28-34 3.44 (350.1 ip, 134 er) with 18 saves, 78 walks and 227 strikeouts in 339 appearances with Montreal, Washington and New York (NL).

Also today, the Arizona Diamondbacks claimed righthanded pitcher Bobby Korecky off waivers from the Twins.
