Edgar Martinez, Roy Hallady named American League Pepsi Player, Pitcher of the Month for May

Seattle Mariners designated hitter Edgar Martinez, who tied for the Major League-lead with 10 home runs along with a ML-best 30 RBIs, and Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Roy Halladay, who was 6-0 with a 3.22 ERA, have been named American League Pepsi Player and Pitcher of the Month for May, respectively.

In 26 games, Martinez batted .280 with 16 runs, three doubles, 12 walks, a .610 slugging percentage, and a .360 on-base percentage. The six-time AL All-Star collected the 2,000th hit of his career on May 2 at Chicago, extending his own club record. In May, the veteran moved up to second all-time among DHs in home runs and RBI, trailing only Harold Baines in each category. Martinez, a five-time monthly award winner, currently ranks among AL leaders in batting average (.328), home runs (14), and RBI (47).

Halladay won each of his six starts in May, pitching seven innings or more in each turn, while playing an integral role in Toronto's franchise-best 21-8 month. The 2002 AL All-Star compiled 35 strikeouts in 44.2 innings pitched, allowing just 40 hits and three walks overall. His month was highlighted by a complete game victory over Chicago on May 27 at SkyDome.
