White Sox Place Gordon Beckham On 15-Day Disabled List With Hamate Fracture In Left Hand; Recall Pitcher Deunte Heath From Class Aaa Charlotte
CLEVELAND - Prior to tonight's game at Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox placed second baseman Gordon Beckham on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to April 10) with a hook of the hamate fracture in his left hand and recalled right-handed pitcher Deunte Heath from Class AAA Charlotte.
Beckham, 26, will undergo surgery early next week and is expected to miss approximately six weeks. He suffered the injury during his second-inning at-bat on Tuesday against Washington. X-rays taken on Tuesday were negative, but a MRI yesterday revealed the fracture.
Beckham is batting .316 (6-19) in seven games this season.
Heath, 27, is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA (3.0 IP) and six strikeouts in two relief appearances with Charlotte this season. The 6-foot-4, 240-pounder spent most of the 2012 season with the Knights, going 4-3 with a 1.48 ERA (11 ER/67.0 IP) and 74 strikeouts in 36 games (four starts). He also pitched in three games with the White Sox in his first major-league season, allowing one run in 2.0 IP over two games.
Heath will wear uniform No. 54.
