Twins unveil new unis for 2010

New road, throwback digs set for Target Field's first year

11/16/09 3:10 PM EST

MINNEAPOLIS -- When the Minnesota Twins open the 2010 season at Target Field, they'll do so in new uniforms paying tribute to Minnesota ballclubs of old.

The Twins unveiled two new jerseys Monday at a ceremony at the IDS Crystal Court in downtown Minneapolis, and center fielder Denard Span and starting pitcher Scott Baker were on hand to show off the new looks.

Span donned the team's secondary throwback jersey, modeled after the off-white wool uniforms worn by the 1961 club -- the first year the Twins played in Minnesota. Baker sported the Twins' new primary road uniform, a solid gray jersey with "Minnesota" written in script on the front.

"These are sweet," said Span of the throwback uniforms. "I kind of feel like Harmon Killebrew or Rod Carew. These are the same uniforms they wore. I'm just glad that we'll get the opportunity to wear these and go out to the new stadium with these uniforms on."

The throwbacks will be worn by the Twins on April 12 -- Opening Day for Target Field -- as well as every Saturday home game. They'll replace the retro uniforms worn by the 2009 team, which paid tribute to the 1982 team, the first to play in the Metrodome.

Minnesota's road uniforms will undergo some significant changes. Gone are the pinstripes from the gray jerseys, while the font on the front of the jerseys will change. And the Twins' "M" road caps will now become the secondary road hats, with the "TC" logo now used primarily for road caps.

"I think it's appropriate. Any time you move into a new place, you want some new digs and a new look," Baker said. "I think they did a really nice job with them. I actually got a chance to see some preliminaries. They turned out really nice."

Baker and Span modeled the new looks in front of a crowd of Twins fans Monday afternoon, as Twins play-by-play announcer Dick Bremer emceed the ceremony.

"First time you've ever been a runway model?" Bremer asked Baker after the pitcher took the stage.

"It's definitely the first," said Baker. "I think the road uniforms have a lot of major changes. Obviously no pinstripes, and the lettering's a lot different."

Span then came on stage to show the fans the throwback uniform, spinning around to make sure the Twins faithful saw the front and back of the jersey.

"I think I look good," Span joked. "I'm definitely looking forward to playing in these uniforms."

Along with the new uniforms, Minnesota unveiled the new primary logo, which uses the "Twins" script with the words "Minnesota Twins Baseball Club." According to Twins president Dave St. Peter, the previous primary mark was created prior to the 1987 season, the year in which Minnesota won the first of its two World Series titles.

"Hopefully, as we unveil our new primary mark -- which is the new baseball logo for the Minnesota Twins -- 2010 will bring that same success," St. Peter said.

The team will also wear an Inaugural Season Logo on its hats and home uniforms throughout the 2010 season. A 50th Anniversary Logo, celebrating Twins baseball from 1961-2010, will be worn on the road jerseys as well as the home throwback uniforms.
