Twins set to celebrate Diversity Day

Event part of team's commitment to embrace the community

08/18/09 1:57 PM ET

The Minnesota Twins have made great strides this year in ensuring the diversity of Twins baseball in our community. Throughout the 2009 baseball season, the Twins have participated in many events and programs to promote diversity on the field, in the stands, in the front office and in our community. Here are just a few of many examples:

• Minnesota Black Chamber of Commerce: In March, the Twins hosted a formal meeting with The Minnesota Black Chamber of Commerce at the Metrodome. More than 25 members and potential vendors from the Chamber spoke with Twins executives about future business opportunities and partnerships with the team.

• Asian Media Access Annual Gala: In March, the Twins participated in the 4th Annual Lunar New Year Gala at the Varsity Theater to lend funding and awareness to the Asian Media Access Multi Arts Complex and youth social education.

• "Home Runs for Hope" with Casa de Esperanza: In April, the Twins hosted "Home Runs for Hope" at the Metrodome with the Casa De Esperanza to help mobilize Latinas and Latino communities to end domestic violence.

• Cinco de Mayo Fiesta: The Twins participated in the annual "Cinco de Mayo Fiesta" event in St. Paul's District del Sol.

• 13th Annual Hispanic Marketing Midwest Conference: Miguel Ramos of the Minnesota Twins was a featured speaker at the 13th Annual Hispanic Marketing Midwest Conference in June at the St. Paul River Centre.

• Liga Hispana de Beisbol: The Twins have collaborated with the Hispanic Baseball League to place three teams in the Reviving Baseball Inner Cities (RBI) program. In addition, three teams representing the Native American Indian communities will participate in the RBI program. Founded in 1989, the RBI program is designed to promote baseball and softball in inner cities while increasing self-esteem and encouraging academic participation and achievement. In Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Twins RBI serves more than 6,000 youth.

• Twins Summer Reading Program: Justin Morneau recently visited the Academia César Chávez Charter School as part of the Twins Summer Reading Program (presented by Cub Foods). Academia César Chávez was selected as the first school to be visited in this program, which encourages the students to read and continue their education while following their passion for baseball.

The Twins are committed to providing equal opportunity for all cultures, including -- but not limited to -- areas of employment, vendor utilization, philanthropic giving and community relations. This commitment will allow us to grow as an organization in a manner consistent with the values and traditions of our community. In addition to participating in many diversity-related programs in our community, the Minnesota Twins invite you to participate in some upcoming events at the Metrodome. To learn more, or to purchase tickets to these events, please visit www.twinsbaseball.com.
