Third baseman gets cortisone shot prior to set vs. Tigers

DETROIT -- Twins third baseman Joe Crede is expected to miss the entire series against the Tigers this weekend, as he will undergo a second cortisone shot in the AC joint of his right shoulder. Crede, who had his first cortisone shot in the shoulder on July 23, said that the pain has returned to the same spot in his shoulder. He couldn't pinpoint an exact time when he re-aggravated the shoulder, mentioning a few diving plays in the field recently, but said that he really felt the pain while taking a swing in the eighth inning of a contest in Cleveland on Thursday. "It's just gotten to a point where another shot was necessary," Crede said. "The soreness is still in there. The best option is to [have the shot] right now." While the first shot gave Crede relief for awhile, he said that the pain has now gotten close to where it was before that initial shot he had while the club was in Los Angeles to face the Angels. Crede was trying to play through the pain, but it's gotten to a point where he felt it was affecting his play. So the doctors advised that another shot could help get rid of the pain once again. "It's really stiff, and there are sharp pains in the AC joint," Crede said. "It's not a good feeling when you go out there playing third and your shoulder is killing you. When hitting up there, that's the last thing you want to worry about is that something is wrong physically and thinking about that rather than trying to hit. With an off-day on Monday, Gardenhire said that the hope is to have Crede back in the lineup for Tuesday's contest against Kansas City at the Metrodome.Kelly Thesier is a reporter for MLB.com.
