Young brothers' mother passes away

Delmon, Dmitri with family during mom's final days

05/20/09 3:51 AM ET

Bonnie Young, the mother of Twins outfielder Delmon Young and injured Nationals first baseman Dmitri Young, died Monday night at her home in Camarillo, Calif., after a bout with cancer.

Delmon Young was placed on the Family Medical Emergency List on Friday so he could travel to California to visit his mother, who died after battling pancreatic and liver cancer for 3 1/2 months.

He is not expected to rejoin the team until after Saturday, when the funeral is expected to take place in Vicksburg, Miss., according to a report by the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Young has already missed five games, and per the rules of the bereavement list, a player must remain on it for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven, which means that the Twins might have to use a 24-man roster next weekend before he returns.

Dmitri Young, who hasn't played this season because of a hip strain, was also with his mother during the week.

The family was featured in a documentary titled "We Are Young: A Baseball Family," which aired on the MLB Network in March.
