-- John B., Detroit Lakes, Minn. The Twins had scouts in attendance on Friday when Crede took batting practice, one of many workouts they have watched in recent weeks. But while Minnesota has remained interested in signing the third baseman, the two sides currently appear to be at an impasse. It's the price tag for Crede that seems to be the stumbling point right now. Crede's agent Scott Boras is reportedly seeking a base salary for Crede of close to $7 million, and the contract would likely have to include incentives that could raise it to nearly $11 million. It's not surprising that the Twins seem hesitant to guarantee that type of money to a player who has played only 144 games combined over the past two years due to back troubles. The FieldTurf at the Metrodome is also a concern. It takes a toll on all the players, so how would it affect a guy with back issues? That's a question that doesn't have an answer right now, so it seems understandable if the Twins are standing firm and not giving in to Crede's asking price. While I understand that signing pitcher Juan Cruz would cost the Twins a first-round Draft pick, wouldn't he be worth the risk? It seems to me his past two years have been very good and that he would fit nicely in front of closer Joe Nathan.
-- Joseph P., Wayzata, Minn. Cruz has been a hot topic in baseball this week, with the news that the D-backs could be trying to sign and then trade the Type A free agent. Cruz hasn't been able to secure a deal this offseason, in part because teams aren't willing to give up a Draft pick to sign him. Sign-and trade deals are nothing new. But in the past, the player had to consent to the deal if traded before June 15. Now the players union and Major League Baseball are working to make the process a little easier with the hope to help the four remaining Type A free agents who are still on the market (Cruz, second baseman Orlando Hudson, shortstop Orlando Cabrera and left-fielder Manny Ramirez.) While the Twins have had internal discussions on Cruz, there has been no indication that they are talking to Cruz's agent or the D-backs about a possible trade. Although the team that gets Cruz would not have to give up their Draft pick if they could secure a trade, Arizona is still expected to ask for compensation. And that compensation is expected to be similar to the first-round and sandwich pick they would have received if Cruz had signed with another ballclub. Other teams besides the Twins are also expected to be interested in Cruz if Draft picks are not in the equation. So it remains to be seen if this will have any impact on the Twins' interest in Cruz. I have noticed that left-hander Dennys Reyes remains unsigned. Is there any talk of the Twins bringing him back?
