I know that many of you fans were disappointed when the Mailbag disappeared early in January, but the good news is that it's returned -- with a slight change.

My regular interaction with Twins fans now has a new name: The Inbox.

Unlike the old Mailbag, which ran every Monday, the Inbox will not have a specific date in which it will run. Instead, I'll write one whenever I get enough questions -- and of course, have enough time to sort through them. My goal is to write an Inbox a week during Spring Training, so please keep those questions coming. And feel free to leave questions at my new blog Kelly's Corner as well.

All right, the sun is shining, and the smell of fresh grass is in the air, which means it's time for me to head out to the fields here at the Lee County Sports Complex and watch some baseball drills. But first I'll leave you with today's edition of the Inbox.

What's the latest on Joe Crede? If the Twins sign him to an incentive-laden contract, what becomes of Brian Buscher and Brendan Harris?
-- John B., Detroit Lakes, Minn.

The Twins had scouts in attendance on Friday when Crede took batting practice, one of many workouts they have watched in recent weeks. But while Minnesota has remained interested in signing the third baseman, the two sides currently appear to be at an impasse. It's the price tag for Crede that seems to be the stumbling point right now. Crede's agent Scott Boras is reportedly seeking a base salary for Crede of close to $7 million, and the contract would likely have to include incentives that could raise it to nearly $11 million.

It's not surprising that the Twins seem hesitant to guarantee that type of money to a player who has played only 144 games combined over the past two years due to back troubles. The FieldTurf at the Metrodome is also a concern. It takes a toll on all the players, so how would it affect a guy with back issues? That's a question that doesn't have an answer right now, so it seems understandable if the Twins are standing firm and not giving in to Crede's asking price.

While I understand that signing pitcher Juan Cruz would cost the Twins a first-round Draft pick, wouldn't he be worth the risk? It seems to me his past two years have been very good and that he would fit nicely in front of closer Joe Nathan.
-- Joseph P., Wayzata, Minn.

Cruz has been a hot topic in baseball this week, with the news that the D-backs could be trying to sign and then trade the Type A free agent. Cruz hasn't been able to secure a deal this offseason, in part because teams aren't willing to give up a Draft pick to sign him.

Sign-and trade deals are nothing new. But in the past, the player had to consent to the deal if traded before June 15. Now the players union and Major League Baseball are working to make the process a little easier with the hope to help the four remaining Type A free agents who are still on the market (Cruz, second baseman Orlando Hudson, shortstop Orlando Cabrera and left-fielder Manny Ramirez.)

While the Twins have had internal discussions on Cruz, there has been no indication that they are talking to Cruz's agent or the D-backs about a possible trade. Although the team that gets Cruz would not have to give up their Draft pick if they could secure a trade, Arizona is still expected to ask for compensation. And that compensation is expected to be similar to the first-round and sandwich pick they would have received if Cruz had signed with another ballclub. Other teams besides the Twins are also expected to be interested in Cruz if Draft picks are not in the equation. So it remains to be seen if this will have any impact on the Twins' interest in Cruz.

I have noticed that left-hander Dennys Reyes remains unsigned. Is there any talk of the Twins bringing him back?
-- Bryan S., Minneapolis, Minn.

Question:

Manager Ron Gardenhire talked about Reyes on Wednesday after the pitchers and catchers workout. Gardenhire said that he would still be interested in having Reyes on his staff again for the '09 season, since the free agent is still without a club.

But after talking with general manager Bill Smith, it seems unlikely that the left-hander will be returning to Minnesota. Smith said the two sides had conversations early in the offseason, but there hasn't been any communication recently. The Twins currently have two left-handers on their 40-man roster in Craig Breslow and Jose Mijares. Breslow is virtually guaranteed a spot in the bullpen and Mijares will be given every opportunity to earn a late-inning relief role this spring following his stellar September as a callup. So while Gardenhire feels he could still find room for Reyes, I don't think we'll be seeing him in a Twins uniform this season.

Will any of the Spring Training games be televised? If so, which ones?
-- Ryan K., Rochester, Minn.

Five of the Twins' Grapefruit League games will be televised this spring. Fox Sports North will air the March 14 contest against the Marlins, the March 26 contest against the Reds and the March 30 contest against the Rays. Two additional games will be televised on WFTC Channel 29 -- the Twins' March 15 game in Tampa against the Yankees and the March 29 game when the Twins host the Cardinals.
