Major League Baseball on Friday ran a series of coin tosses to determine the sites for various potential two-team tiebreakers that would impact the 2008 postseason.
Minnesota lost twice; the Twins will head to Boston to play the Red Sox at Fenway Park if the teams end the season in a Wild Card tie, and the Twins would play the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field to break a tie atop the American League Central.
While teams within 5 1/2 games of a postseason berth were included in the coin flips, not all scenarios were fleshed out. Additional coin tosses will be necessary over the rest of the 2008 regular season. One such possible scenario is if Minnesota and Tampa Bay tie for the Wild Card. The Twins are currently one game behind the White Sox in the AL Central and 5 1/2 games behind Boston for the Wild Card. Minnesota's home record of 49-26 is tied with Chicago for the third-best in the AL, trailing Tampa Bay and Boston. The Twins' record away from the Metrodome is 31-40. If the Twins and White Sox end the regular season tied but both are assured of participating in the postseason, then the first tiebreaker to determine which club is the division champion and which club is the Wild Card would be their 2008 season-series record. The second tiebreaker is divisional record. The Twins are 7-8 against the White Sox. The clubs will hook up for three more games at the Metrodome starting on Sept. 23. Minnesota is currently 39-24 against the AL Central, while Chicago is 37-23. Representatives of affected teams participated in a conference call to determine the tiebreakers. The coin flips were conducted at Major League Baseball's Manhattan headquarters. TBS and ESPN Radio would provide national coverage of any tiebreaker game, which would be tentatively scheduled for Monday, Sept. 29. In the event of simultaneous or overlapping tiebreaker games, TNT would provide national coverage.Thor Nystrom is an associate reporter for MLB.com.
