CHICAGO -- Twins catcher Mike Redmond left the first inning of Game 2 of Friday's Twins-White Sox doubleheader when his head was cut by the bat of White Sox slugger Jim Thome.

Thome's bat flew out of his hands -- for the second time in the at-bat -- and hit Redmond on the right side of his head. Redmond immediately fell to the ground and grabbed his head as blood flowed onto his hand. The cut on Redmond's head required stitches, but no trip to the hospital. Redmond did not lose consciousness during the delay, and he is day-to-day.

When Redmond left the game, Joe Mauer took over for the Twins behind the plate. Mauer, who caught the first game of the doubleheader, began Game 2 as the designated hitter. With the loss of the DH, Matt Garza, making his first start this season, was moved into the No. 8 spot in the Twins lineup.
