Last summer, GRE bought out its federal debt and entered the capital markets for all our current and future debt. This is a huge change for an electric cooperative! Our CFO was doing the rounds in NYC with JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs, making presentations to lots of banks—international and domestic—about being a part of our offering.
One morning he got a call from a representative he had met from a Japanese bank. They were in Tokyo, watching the Twins vs. Yankees game on TV. There was our outfield signage. They asked if it was US, and he said yes! They made a bid on a piece of our debt right after that—they figured we must be "someone" if we had signage in the outfield!
Who would have thought we were getting international coverage—and it would pay off in a great business deal! Thanks!"
