Minnesota Twins announce Spring Training invites

Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN - The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have extended spring training invites to 15 players who are not on the major league roster.

The spring training invite list includes three catchers: Kyle Geiger, the Twins' 42nd round draft pick in the June, 2002 free agent draft, Kyle Phillips, the Twins' 10th round pick in the June, 2002 free agent draft and Shawn Wooten, who was signed by the Twins as a free agent, December 21, 2005. Geiger batted .257 (75-292) with eight doubles, six homers and 33 rbi in 81 games last season for Ft. Myers (A, Florida State League), Phillips batted .230 (64-278) with 12 doubles, one triple, two homers and 32 rbi in 83 games for Ft. Myers and .209 (14-67) with one double, two homers and eight rbi in 22 games for New Britain (AA, Eastern League) last season, and Wooten batted .267 (114-427) with 20 doubles, 17 homers and 60 rbi in 114 games for Pawtucket (AAA, International League) and .000 (0-1) in one game with Boston last season.

Four infielders have been invited to camp: Jason Hart, who was signed by the Twins as a free agent, De-cember 14, 2005, Luis Maza, who was signed by the Twins as a free agent, October 28, 1997, Tommy Watkins, the Twins' 38th round pick in the June, 1998 free agent draft and Glenn Williams, who was signed by the Twins as a free agent, December 15, 2004. Hart batted .246 (118-480) with 28 doubles, one triple, 21 homers and 77 rbi in 128 games with Frisco (AA, Texas League) last season, Maza batted .249 (49-197) with nine doubles, six homers and 23 rbi in 49 games for New Britain and .291 (80-275) with 14 doubles, two triples, 11 homers and 43 rbi in 76 games with Rochester (AAA, International League) last season, Watkins batted .229 (73-319) with 19 doubles, four homers and 24 rbi in 116 games with New Britain last season, and Williams batted .303 (53-175) with 12 doubles, one triple, five homers and 22 rbi in 48 games with Rochester and .425 (17-40) with one double and three rbi in 13 games with Minnesota last season.

Four outfielders have been invited to camp: Josh Rabe, the Twins' 11th round pick in the June, 2000 free agent draft, Denard Span, the Twins' first round (20th overall) pick in the June, 2002 free agent draft, Andres Torres, who was signed by the Twins as a free agent, December 20, 2005 and Jason Tyner, who was signed by the Twins as a free agent, November 10, 2004. Rabe batted .239 (68-285) with 17 doubles, 11 homers and 49 rbi in 90 games with Rochester last season, Span batted .339 (63-186) with three doubles, three triples, one homer and 19 rbi in 49 games with Ft. Myers and .285 (76-267) with six doubles, five triples and 26 rbi in 68 games with New Britain last season, Tor-res batted .302 (19-63) with three doubles, one triple and one rbi in 15 games with Oklahoma City (AAA, Pacific Coast League) and .158 (3-19) with one double and one rbi in eight games with Texas last season, and Tyner batted .286 (150-524) with 18 doubles, two triples, one homer and 36 rbi in 133 games with Rochester and .321 (18-56) with one double, one triple and five rbi in 18 games with Minnesota last season.

Four pitchers have been invited to camp: lefthander Ricky Barrett, the Twins' seventh round pick in the June, 2002 free agent draft, lefthander Glen Perkins, the Twins' second of three first round picks (22nd overall) in the June, 2004 free agent draft, leftthander Dennys Reyes, who was signed by the Twins as a free agent, December 27, 2005, and lefthander Gabe White, who was signed by the Twins as a free agent, January 4, 2006. Barrett was 1-0, 0.51 (17.2 ip, 1 er) with seven walks and 25 strikeouts in 10 games with New Britain and 4-4, 6.71 (63.0 ip, 47 er) with 48 walks and 64 strikeouts in 40 games (five starts) with Rochester last season, Perkins was 3-2, 2.13 (55.0 ip, 13 er) with 13 walks and 66 strikeouts in 10 games (nine starts) with Ft. Myers and 4-4, 4.90 (79.0 ip, 43 er) with 35 walks and 67 strikeouts in 14 starts with New Britain, Reyes was 3-2, 5.15 (43.2 ip, 25 er) with 32 walks and 35 strikeouts in 36 games (one start) with San Diego last season, and White was 0-0, 0.00 (7.1 ip) with one save, one walk and eight strikeouts in eight games for Memphis (AAA, Pacific Coast League) and 0-0, 2.16 (8.1 ip, 2 er) with one walk and one stikeout in six games with St. Louis last season.

Twins' pitchers and catchers will report to spring training in Fort Myers, Florida on Sunday, February 19 with workouts beginning February 20, while the balance of the squad will report on Friday, February 24 with the first full-squad workout taking place on February 25. The Twins annual photo day will be held on Monday, February 27 at 8:00 am.

The Twins, who have a 33-game Grapefruit League exhibition schedule, will open their spring home season on Thursday, March 2 vs. the Boston Red Sox at 7:05 pm (EST).
